ISRO launches world’s first smartphone controlled nano satellite STRaND-1 successfully into orbit

STRaND-1 curtesy SSTL ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) today successfully launched the world’s first smart phone controlled nano satellite – STRaND-1 along with 6 other satellites using it’s highly successful PSLV- C20 launch vehicle. STRaND-1 (Surrey Training, Research, and Nanosatellite Demonstrator) built by Surrey Space Technologies LTD(SSTL),Uk is a low cost technology demonstrator nano satellite controlled by Google Nexus One Android smartphone. SSTL website states – after the initial operating system of the satellite finishes it’s checks,  the control of the satellite would be passed to the smartphone. The Android mobile would run some apps and take pictures of the earth using it’s own camera through a port-hole in the satellite. Pic : Linus rising his middle finger to Nvidia Lot of us who use Linux with NVIDIA Chips know that open-source drivers for Nvidia is not up-to the mark since NVIDIA does not open-source its drivers, this seem to have angered Linus Torvalds – the brain behind the Linux kernel to the point of him calling “‘NVIDIA has been the single worst company we have ever dealt with.” Torvalds was speaking earlier this week at the Aalto Center for Entrepreneurship in Otaneimi Finland. He spoke for one hour and his entire interview with public Q&A is available below. Linus said NVIDIA is an exception to Linux support rather than the rule in terms of their lack of freindliness towards open-source drivers and the linux community etc, He also mentioned he is happy to publicly point them out and their problems. Those who travel frequently would be hugely benefittedby NTP 2012 plans The cabinet today approved the new telecom policy that proposes to abolish roaming charges on mobile phones and allow users to retain same number across the country. National Telecom Policy (NTP) 2012, was approved by the cabinet in a meeting conducted today. The NTP 2012 aims to provide free roaming to telecom users and allow them to retain the mobile number even outside their circles without having to pay any extra charge. Currently users had to pay extra charge when they receive or make call in a circle outside their home network called roaming charges which are usually higher than the call charges inside home network. The Pirate Bay has addes a new IP-adress which allows users to circumvent the many court-ordered blockades against the site.Hollywood backed anti-piracy group BREIN has already been to court to demand a block against this new address. But this won’t deter TPB, who sat they are fully prepared for an extended game of whac-a-mole using hundreds of IP addresses they have available. TPB says, each time their IP address is blocked by the ISP they will add a new IP address making it easier for the users and for proxy sites. Google has released the first video shot by its project Glass at a conference in San Francisco .  The video shows a person wearing the glasses jumping on a trampoline. The the video is just 15 secs and of low resolution as with previous released photographs from the project glass.
