Soodhu Kavvum movie review :

Pre Release Hype :

Producer C.V Kumar  has a knack to make movies with debutant movie directors with short budgets and reap in big (read as Pizzaa!) profits. This time he is introducing ‘Naalaya Iyakunar’ fame Nalan Kumarasamy as  the director for Vijay Sethupathi starrer ‘Soodhu Kavvum’ retaining most of the cast and crew from last year’s super successful Pizza. Expectations have risen for this movie after the release of non conventional soundtracks.

Post Release Review :

Vijay Sethupathi as Das, a professional kidnapper assures us at the begining that this movie is going to be a full length comedy with lot of chases involved when he get’s beaten by a girl ! Sanchita Shetty as Shalu plays a friend of Das. Three jobless friends Pagalavan, Kesavan and Sekhar played by Simhaa, Ashok Selvan and RJ Ramesh Thilak respectively under circumstances get involved in a kidnapping plot by Das and later become his acquaintance’s for further kidnappings.

Their good fortune ends when they kidnap the son of a honest minister Ngyana Udhayam played by M. S. Bhaskar as the minister’s son Arumai Pragasan played by Karuna Karan is having big plans of his own. The rest of the movie involves the quartet being chased by a psychotic/encounter-obsessive cop  and whether they escape with their lives or not is for what you’ve to see in a comic-action fashion .

Casting is done to the precision by Nalan. Other than Vijay Sethupathi no one else in this movie is a well known face, still every one flush-fit into their roles accordingly. Sanchita Shetty seem to have been put just for the sake to provide hot company (She rejects to wear anything beyond her thighs !) to Das but also has a role to play in his Psychology.

Good choice by the director to have  songs in Bg except ‘Kasu Panam’ as pretty much all the songs have just one word in loop ! Still Santosh Narayanan does a good job in making it rhyme, especially “Mama Douser”. A small bird tells me this could be the be the next thing in the dictionary of  Uber generation tamil after “Vada Poache”.

Editing by Leo John Paul has become distinct with his colour full vector graphics as seen in the posters and trailers. He does an amazing job in delivering what is needed by the script without bloating on CG effects. I wish I could tell about few scenes where the panache of Leo John can been seen, but I cannot compromise on  my promise of this being a non spoiler review(But still, you can watch the full review with spoilers below!). There are some scenes like the cop using Night vision goggles to beat up the four in a dark room , which I felt was unnecessary but could have been for stressing on the urges of the psycho cop. The action sequences gets a plus one for fist fighting in fight jobs instead of wire flying (learn big directors, learn big actors !).

Conclusion :

The trailer looked mankatha’ish, the script looks manaktha’ish but the movie isn’t. Soodhu Kavvum is another example of comprehended movie making without compromising entertainment or logic. Another gold into C.V Kumar and Vijay Sethupathi’s pockets !
