Multitasking in windows phone 8 – Part 1(chat)

Chat with windows phone 8

Microsoft gives away skype application for instant messaging on windows phone 8 platform. As you all know,Skype is current and future messenger supported on windows 8,windows 8 platforms and this app supports Skype, facebook, live accounts only.So its natural for an user to look for clients supporting gmail, yahoo and other messenger platforms.

I recently bought my Nokia Lumia 520 and was disappointed with the way chat apps worked for me.Apart from skype,I installed two messenger apps Nimbuzz and FIM Chat  for gmail and Nimbuzz accounts.Once i installed the apps,I opened Skype and Nimbuzz at the same time so that i would be online on skype and gmail

accounts.

Whenever skype was active in foreground,my gmail account signed in from Nimbuzz went offline. It was reported by friend that i go offline on my gmail account often i.e whenever i switch between Nimbuzz to skype. The behaviour of the Nimbuzz chat application was disappointing and placed a question on the potential of  windows phone platform.I tested the behaviour with the FIM chat app and few other apps and the results turned out the same.

Is windows phone fundamentally flawed?Thats the question that I wanted to find out.

What caused the behaviour?

Windows phone 8 platform relies on background agents for multitasking and background agents are not supported in all the chat apps that are available in windows phone store.

For example,Skype application supports background agents and therefore even if the application is closed, the phone will continue to show the updates from skype contacts.Once the app is closed, the skype background agent continues to run in the phone and shows a toast notification for any skype updates.

Screenshot shows the background agent for Skype Application from windows phone 8 settings .

The applications that i tried out for my google accounts did not support background agents. So whenever they were switched, the accounts went offline and only when they were brought foreground ,they connect to the accounts and once again become online.

So what did i do to use my google accounts for instant messaging along with skype?

I installed the  famous chat application for windows phone 8 that supports background agent- IM+

Screenshot shows the IM+ settings that allow you to opt for background tasks.

This is the best application available on windows phone 8 for maintaining multiple accounts.

Please check out the review of IM + application written in the site here at — (The review is being written.)

At this time,Nimbuzz app didnt support backgroung agent on my Nokia Lumia 520.

Why IM+ is not showing background tasks in settings/Background tasks?

I am checking this thing for now and we will have an definite idea of how Microsoft allows background tasks for apps i.e on what basis in Part 2 of this article.

IM+ doesn’t show up in background agents because it actually isn’t running in the background!!!

    It uses push notifications!
