Pre Release Hype :
Hit maker A.L Vijay’s next film Thaandavam starring Vikram and Anushka is supposedly an romantic action thriller, the trio did a commendable job in last year’s super hit ‘Deiva Thirumagal’ but unlike the former which was a subtle heartwarming movie, Thaandavam is supposed to bring back Vikram’s action hero status. So will Thaandavam join the series of Hits by A.L Vijay or will it be a miss ? Read on, don’t worry as usual my review doesn’t have any spoilers.
Post Release Review :
The movie starts with blood stained ‘Thaandavam’ title with 3D font, which gives a hint that this a full action movie, to give you even more assurance the first scene has important places in London blown up in a bomb blast. The scene is fast forwarded by a year to show blind Vikram, who plays music for choir at a church and Vikram takes night out to hunt down people who’s addresses are given to him by a mysterious lady which A.L. Vijay makes sure that you think as Anushka. So the plot unfolds on why Vikram is hunting down these people and what he has to do with the London blasts a year before.
Santhanam is at his usual best with his one-liners and continues being a driver for the hero like his past few movies. He is shown as a cab driver in London speaking broken english and gets caught by police for Vikram’s actions. Amy jackson plays the role of one-side love interest in the first half of the movie and takes Yar dee song to her credit, have to mention that there’s no unusual lip sync in this song with english dancers singing in tamil like it has been for a while in tamil cinema. Nasser is a cool srilankan-tamil detective who investigates the murders committed by Vikram, and is seen playing games on his ipad all the time. In fact the iPad is shown more than Nasser in most of the scenes.
Anushka takes over the second half of the film with her usual subtle acting and must mention the marriage sequence between Vikram and Anushka is one of the best ever in tamil cinema. The relationship between Vikram and Anushka is portrayed brilliantly by A.L. Vijay. ‘Oru Padhi Kanavu’ song is worth humming, a result of decent music scored by G.V Prakash, though background music could have been a bit better for such fast paced movie.
The movie is made to be as realistic as possible. Thaandavam has some first’s for tamil cinema, following a series of Bollywood movies like ‘Kahani’, ‘Agent Vinod’ and ‘Ek Tha Tiger’, Thaandavam is the first tamil movie in recent times to have Indian Intelligence ‘RAW’ in the subject and to mention ‘MI6’. A.L Vijay’s casting is a huge bonus for his film making like casting saranya for the role of Vikram’s mother, Jagapati Babu as Intelligence official though I felt more could have been pulled out of his character and casting Daniel Kish as himself for instructing Vikram in echo location technique.
Technically there were very minor mistakes. Like prop mistake when NSG commandos are shown having A.K 47 rifles, NSG’s are supposed to be the best armed commando unit in the country and they now have SIG SG 550 and IMI Tavor TAR-21 rifles, it is hight time movie prop rifles get updated. Also in one scene Vikram is shown seeing the happenings of a multi story building through the windows with his bare eyes to the point that he can even see a tiny thumb-drive on the hand’s of a terrorist . I felt the BMX stunts were un called for, as the stunt double is seen all the time, but fist fighting by Vikram was good to see especially with the english men. Kudos to A.L Vijay for using fist fighting in the movie and not using un-necessary rope techniques.
Conclusion : Over all, Thaandavam is an Intelligence movie made intelligently ! I can say it out right that it is so far the best ‘high-budget’ movie of this year. But there are few things which stops Thaandavam from becoming ‘The best movie’ like the story line could have been a bit crispier with more suspense and thrilling scenes on the corners. A common thing I heard in theatres after the movie was that, It was like ‘Ghajini’ although according to me the only similarity was the protagonist taking vengeance.
Rating : Thaandavam gets 4 dragons !
